 Taking a Nostalgic Turn

Dongbianmen City Gate & Tongfu Bridge [ Open New Window ] Taiwan's recorded history started from Tainan. Geographic factors make Kaohsiung, especially Kaohsiung County one of the regions for early development in Taiwan. Fongshan City, Capital of Kaohsiung County was the development center in Southern Taiwan (South of Tainan) as early as more than 300 years ago.

As we try to explore history starting from Fongshan, the first stop is Longshan Temple. It has more than 300 years of history. Other then its long history, its major difference from other temples in terms of layout is the handmade sculpture from both outside and inside. The simple and clear lines of gables reserve the abundant and complete traditional architectural property. It is worthy of appreciation.

Taking a turn to the right lane of the Longshan Temple, the wall of Syunfong Fort is an arc. It is the fortress for Han people whom immigrated from mainland China and trading ships in early years. It possesses important geographic position. The work of Syunfong Fort is delicate and full of art value. It adds another record for the historical property of Kaohsiung County.

Chenglan Fort is also a historical site as Syunfong Fort. It was built to strengthen military defense during Taokuang 18th year of the Ching Dynasty. It is national designated grade 3 historical site and is located in southern west of ancient Fongshan County, that is today's cross road of Lijhih Street and Fushing Street. Chenglan Fort is an irregular octagonal. Granite Stone with the words of “Chenglan” is still seen on the wall. As visitors pay a visit to this place, it is like immersed in history.

Fongbitou Archaeological Site is a pre-historical Site. Painted pottery is under the ground layer of black pottery and belongs to continental culture system. It has close connection with Yang-shao Culture and Long Shan Culture. As for the reddish gray pottery culture, a plain reddish gray pottery archaeological site was found. It existed around 300 and 1200 years ago. Therefore, the excavation and research on Fonshang City's prehistorical culture of Fongbitou Archaeological Site is a valuable asset.

In historical review, the forgotten history of Chenhai is reminded. Although there are many little flowers and wild grass beside the tomb stone of the Chenhai Soldiers' Cemetery (Naval Cemetery, Jiasian), they add more sense of sadness and sorrow. According to the estimation of historians, when troops were stationed here during Kuang Hsu Period of the Ching Dynasty, soldiers passed away due to change of environment and suffering of malaria. These lonely souls of soldiers were buried here among growing wild grasses. They were not found until the land owner came here to have farming and found this forgotten history. Next time when you have the chance to come to Jiasian, why not come here to pay respect to them.

Next, we come to the historical site of Meinong County---Jhuzaimen Power Plant. Since it ceases to operate, the antique power plant and the baroque-style building are ranked as national designated heritage site. The entire area is verdant and birds are singing. It looks like a garden with forest and has the beauty of tranquility. The surroundings make the elegant building radiate a simple beauty of architectural art. The Shrine of Land Deity is beside the water-controlling gate in the front pool. It is the Land Deity without golden body that is commonly seen in Hakka village, and has quietly protected this land and historical property.

Next, let’s pay a visit to the Minongjhuang Oblation Furnace. It is a third grade historical site in Meinong. Although it looks like a furnace to burn joss paper, it indeed symbolizes Hakka's concept of cherishing characters. This oblation furnace is still in use. Although it is ranked as a heritage site, it is a living one and can operate normally. We should cherish it.

There are a great deal of historical sites surrounded Fongshan and present a diversified picture. All of them still have and will have strong impacts on later generation and are very nostalgic. The Ruins of Fongshan City Wall covers a large range of land. reaching to mountain and sea side. Different styles show different pictures as well as cultures. With delicate and beautiful natural landscape, these historical sites are the best choices for the trip of spiritual beauty.
