In comparison with the history of Fongshan City, the multiethnic culture deeply rooted in the remote mountain area in Jiasian Township is also worth exploring.
Far from bustling city life and villages in the countryside, Duona village in Maolin Township is located in the most remote mountain area and is home to three tribes. The indigenous Lukai culture is very well preserved in Duona village. It is surrounded by great mountains and embraces the astonishingly beautiful scenery. The indigenous people of the village have thrived on this pristine land in southern Taiwan for thousands of years. Despite constant invasions by outside forces, the indigenous people of Duona village have constantly overcome the danger of eradication through their strong belief in life. What remains unchanged since their existence is their love for the land and binding spirit. Duona village is the home of the most ancient and still active indigenous tribes located in the Central Range in Southern Taiwan. The richness of the ethnic culture is thoroughly embedded in and appreciated on this land. Further into Maolin, one can see the old tribal site of the Deledeka (Maya) tribe in Maolin. The Lukai tribal villages, traditional architecture, cemetery, Stone God, and the cultural relics representing tribal culture are well preserved in this old tribal site. The traditional slate houses and handicrafts are particularly intriguing and attractive. Black rice worship is a unique ritual originating from Duona village. This ancient tribal site is the best choice to experience the Lukai culture. The name of the Duona high suspension bridge connotes the meaning of ‘extremely high'. The long red suspension bridge has played an important role in the development of Duona villagers' life. Apart from that, this suspension bridge also plays a role as an 'emotional and farewell' bridge for the Lukai indigenous people to bid farewell to their families, lovers and friends. Some heart-broken women have attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the bridge, yet the height of the bridge and the gusting winds have frightened them and stopped them from ending their lives. Apart from that, countless couples and families have woven their unspeakable and heart-felted stories here, which illustrate their earnest expectation of the early return of their family. Hence, the suspension bridge is also a bridge inscribed with extraordinary stories of spirit and love. The bridge overlooks a panorama of beautiful scenery with endless high ranges submerged by foggy clouds as well as crystal clear scenic views of beautiful mountains and the rivers. A creek flows through the gorge right under the suspension bridge. The breathtaking beauty of nature unfolds in front of visitors’ eyes and the cool mountain breeze placates their minds. You can observe the stunning scenery, feel the powerful wind, and appreciate the magnificent view of Duona village.
Villages are often associated with historical relics. The Lukai culture exhibition centre, the first exhibition centre of Lukai culture in Taiwan, is located inside Maolin Elementary School. Its exterior design is inspired from a traditional aboriginal slate house. The exhibited items include embroidery, knitting fabric, urns, and hundred-pace snake related ornaments. Moreover, the culture of other aboriginal tribes, such as the Bunong and Beinan tribes, are also displayed in the centre allowing tourists to appreciate aboriginal culture in more detail.
The last part of the trip leads to Maolin village, home of the Maga tribe. The original tribe is situated at the foot of Wandou Mountain, which is in the inner mountainous area above Meiya Waterfall. The conventional name for Maolin is ‘old Maolin’. Its tribal people also call it Deleleka. Maolin village is the administrative centre of Maolin Township. It has the largest population among the three villages. The village hosts traditional activities annually, such as harvest festivals. Tourists are always impressed by the enthusiasm and vitality of the village people.
The nearly extinct Pingpu tribe, which used to live at the foot of mountain and the aboriginal people of Lukai, Bunong, or Paiwan live in remote mountainous areas that still uphold their tribal traditions and maintain their dignity. The picturesque scenery of the surrounding mountains and rivers resembles a lost paradise. The fresh air, beautiful scenery and a variety of cheap agricultural products are particularly worth mentioning as well. There is no need to arrange a tour. Even if it is just for a walk, Maolin is always the most enjoyable place to visit and escape from noisy city life. |
